Weed Tea Tutorial, Learn How To Make The Best Weed Stem Tea!

Just like regular tea, cannabis or weed stem tea can be made in a variety of ways with different ingredients depending on your preference. In this blog, we focus on six recipes that will cover how you can make marijuana stem tea. The following 4 marijuana tea recipes are the ones that our team at GoldBuds will dive into:

  1. Non-Soluble Cannabis Tea
  2. Soluble Tea using Dairy
  3. Cannabis Golden Milk with Medicated Coconut Oil
  4. Tea with Rose and Chamomile

But before we discuss the recipes, let’s have a look at some essential things about making cannabis tea. There are various methods you can use to make the weed stem tea recipe. The three methods listed down below will be used in our recipes, depending on what you are hoping to get from your marijuana tea you will use one of the following methods:

  1. Infusion of water and dry flowers (this provides a less powerful high as the THC is non-soluble in water)
  2. Infusing the cannabis with fat such as butter, milk, or coconut oil. It can be combined with tea leaves for a more exquisite taste.
  3. A tincture – an extraction method using alcohol to derive the flavour and THC.

Although the recipe and ingredients can be numerous, these are the three primary methods used for making weed steam tea.

How Are Cannabis Tinctures Made?

Novice users often make the mistake of assuming that simply boiling the cannabis in the tea can extract the THC. Unfortunately making marijuana tea is not that easy. Extracting the THC can be a challenge for someone who does not know the procedure. Once you become familiar with solubility factors and decarboxylation, much of the pain is reduced and it’s all green pasture from thereon.

Contrary to what you believe, cannabis by itself does not contain THC; it contains another compound THCA, which does not possess the medicinal and psychoactive properties that you are probably looking for. During the process of decarboxylation, the THCA compound reacts and converts to THC, which has all the medicinal properties and the toxicity. When you smoke or vape cannabis, the heat promotes decarboxylation without much effort. THCA converts to THC when it’s exposed to a high amount of heat such as when cooking cannabis with oils or butter. However, for making the tea you have to activate the THC before preparing the tea.

If you are planning to decarboxylate the cannabis before adding it to the tea, there are certain things to consider such as the duration and the temperature of decarboxylation. As different strains of cannabis have a different physical appearance and other factors, not all strains can follow the same procedure. Some things to consider before decarboxylation are:

  • The moisture in the cannabis strain,
  • Type of heating apparatus, and
  • How much cannabis you are using.

Does Marijuana Stem Tea get you High?

A normal stem tea won’t get you high; however, a marijuana stem tea prepared after decarboxylation will definitely get you high. In fact, the healthiest way of deriving the high and the medicinal benefits of cannabis is through the tea. With other methods, you waste the THC in the form of smoke and ash; however, through the weed tea method, 100% of the THC is consumed. The potency of the tea depends on the strain you choose and its THC percentage.

Before we discuss how to make weed tea with stems, let’s have a look at some history and the origins of the tea.

History Of Cannabis Tea

Tea made from weed is one of the oldest medicines used in ancient civilizations around the world such as Chinese, Indian, Egyptian, and the Caribbeans. The medicinal benefits of cannabis were not discovered by modern science, ancient healers were well-aware of its effects in treating illness and diseases.

In China, evidence has been discovered that suggests cannabis was used in the region from 10,000 – 2,000 BC. The Chinese sage emperor Shennong is thought to be the first person to discover the secrets of cannabis and hemp in treating medical conditions.

A document discovered called the Ebers Papyrus from 1500 BC describes the use of cannabis in today’s Egypt to treat hemorrhoids. The use of cannabis in medicine has been referred in a number of ancient Egyptian documents including Ramesseum III Papyrus (from c. 1700 BC), the Berlin Papyrus (c. 1300 BC), Chester Beatty Medical Papyrus (c. 1300 BC), and Chester Beatty Medical Papyrus (c. 1300 BC). Ancient remains found in Egypt have been discovered covered in cannabis pollen.

Cannabis has a cultural connection with India. A variety of the cannabis plant has religious significance with cannabis consumption being common throughout the country during the ‘Holi’ festival. Weed stem tea is a common sighting in the country if you know where to look. However, the plant still remains banned in the country. Ayurveda has several medicines that use cannabis as an ingredient. India has been using cannabis for various uses since thousands of years.

In the Caribbean, cannabis is a part of religious ceremonies. Ganja tea is very popular in Jamaica made from the young cannabis plants.

Another very popular plant that is sued for its effects that can get you high is the indigenous cactus called Peyote. If you want to learn more about Peyote In Canada check our blog out!

How to make Stem Tea and Stem Tea Recipe

"marijuana stems laying on a table"

Here are our carefully picked weed tea recipes:

 1. Non-Soluble Cannabis Tea

Preparing the non-soluble cannabis tea is easy, but remember though, the non-soluble tea will not have THC; hence, no high. With that cleared up, it only takes a few minutes to make the non-soluble weed stem tea. Take the stem of the cannabis and grind and shake it. Once you have that done, you can choose to directly boil the powder in water and strain it or put the mix in a tea bag.

You can use your regular tea bag, simply open it from the top, place the power into the tea bag and close it. Dip the tea bag in hot water. You are good to go. As you keep making the weed stem tea recipe, you will get better at it and realize how long you should boil the tea and proportions of other ingredients such as milk and cream. Start off with something simple and keep experimenting until you find the balance that’s just right for you.

Here is a recipe we have perfected, but it can vary depending on the strain. Take 2-3 grams of the ground stem and add it to 2 cups of boiling water, simmer the cannabis stem in the water for 30-40 minutes. You can adjust the proportions as you become more experienced. After 40 minutes, strain it, and your non-soluble cannabis tea is ready for you to drink and enjoy.

2. Soluble Tea using Dairy

Once you become accustomed to making the non-soluble cannabis tea, making the soluble tea using dairy becomes not so difficult or different. The major difference between both is the decarboxylation process. To make the soluble tea – which by the way is toxic and gets the THC released – you have to use dairy, oil, or fat for decarboxylation to occur. A large number of people including us prefer to use butter as it is high in fat and gets the job done quickly. However, some users do not like the taste of butter in their tea and do not prefer to use better.

Whichever ingredients you prefer does not make a difference so, if you choose cream or milk. Use one with high-fat content not skimmed milk.

What to use depends on how you are planning on consuming the tea. If you plan to have the tea plain with nothing but sweeteners and a little milk, its best you use butter or the tea will be too creamy. On the other hand, if you are planning on a Chai Latte, then it’s fine using cream or milk during decarboxylation.

What makes this method so great is that you may not even need water depending on what you are about to make. However, if you would be storing the tea for later use, water with cannabis and butter is the ideal combination. So, now that we have covered that, here are some stem tea recipes to try.

  • Green Tea using Cannabis – To prepare the green tea using cannabis stem you require 3 cups of water, 2 tablespoon butter, and half gram ground weed, preferably Sweet Island Skunk strain. Boil the water until it starts to simmer and add the 2 tablespoons of butter. After the butter melts and dissolves in the water add the cannabis. Allow the mixture to boil for 40 minutes checking and stirring a few times in between, every five minutes should do the trick. If the water evaporates too quickly add more water. After you have boiled the mixture for 40 minutes, strain the tea using a strainer. Let it cool for some time and enjoy your green tea with cannabis and butter.
  • Chai Tea Latte – For the chai latte, you require ingredients with proportion – half cup of water, half-gram ground weed, half tablespoon butter, 1 tea bag, 1 cup cream or milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Put the weed, cream or milk, vanilla, and butter in the blender. Blend until you obtain a smooth mixture. Let the mixture rest aside and infuse in one another for 1 hour. After that, add the blended mixture and water in a pot. Boil the mixture for 30 minutes. Again, if the water evaporates and the concentration starts to thicken add some more water. Once done, remove the tea from the stove, add the tea bag, and let it rest for five minutes. You can also add sugar, sweeteners, or honey to heighten the flavor of the tea. Enjoy the tea with snacks as the Sweet Island Skunk promotes appetite.

3. Cannabis Golden Milk with Medicated Coconut Oil

The cannabis golden milk with coconut oil for one serving takes 5 minutes preparation time and 20 minutes cooking time. So, within half an hour you will be ready to enjoy the weed tea. The amount of cannabis coconut oil depends on your level of tolerance and the toxicity of the strain.

The ingredients required for the marijuana stem tea recipe includes 1 tablespoon medicated coconut oil, 1 cinnamon stick, one and half piece ginger – peeled and sliced, quarter teaspoon whole black peppercorns, 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, a small piece of turmeric – peeled and sliced, 1 tablespoon honey, and ground cinnamon.

Whisk the ginger, almond milk, honey, cinnamon, peppercorns, turmeric, and a cup of water in a pan and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat and add the weed coconut oil to the mix. Let the mixture boil for another 10 minutes and strain it in a cup. Sprinkle a dash of cinnamon on top and you have your delicious and THC rich tea ready.

4. Tea with Rose and Chamomile

The weed, rose, and chamomile tea for 1 serving takes less than 20 minutes to make. 5 minutes of prep and 10-15 minutes of cooking. Just like the above recipe, the potency depends on the amount of cannabis you decide to add.

The ingredients required to make the tea includes honey infused with cannabis, 2 tablespoons dried chamomile, 2 tablespoons dried cannabis buds, trim, and stems. Don’t miss out on the coconut milk and rosebuds.

Once you have the ingredients ready, decarboxylate the cannabis if you want potency and THC in the tea, otherwise leave it be. Add the rosebuds, chamomile, and cannabis in water and place the mix in a tea infuser and let it run hot for 5-10 minutes. Once done, you can add the cannabis-infused honey or coconut milk for an exquisite flavour.

Effects of Marijuana Tea

The reason why people choose to make weed tea is to obtain THC and CBD. However, when done in the right way, the tea can taste as good as any other tea. The cannabis in the tea would provide you with energy and depending on the strain it can make you active throughout the day. You can take the tea when you are exhausted and about to go to sleep.

Unlike the other methods of consuming weed, the tea is relatively slow to manifest its effects. It usually takes anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes for the THC to take effect and you start to experience the high. However, the duration before the tea hits a person varies from one person to the other depending on their metabolism. The THC tolerance level of the user also plays a role on how the tea reacts.

These marijuana tea methods are excellent and unique ways to get high, give them a try with some of the premium marijuana products that we carry online!

Some Common FAQs of Weed Tea

  • Can You Refrigerate Marijuana Tea?

Unless you put milk or sugar in the tea, it can be refrigerated for several days and even for a week. If there is butter in the tea, it can still be stored for a few days, but we do not recommend more than 3 days. It is best to enjoy the tea fresh rather than refrigerated.

  • Does Weed Tea Lack Potency?

No, the tea is as potent as any other way of consuming the weed. In fact, the tea might be more potent if an experienced user makes the tea. As there is no wastage of THC in this process, the potency of the tea may be high. The exact potency of the tea depends on the strain of weed you use for the tea. A high THC strain will create a potent tea.

  • How Does Marijuana Tea Taste?

A simple tea with no other ingredients tastes soaked and squeezed weed; however, the taste of the tea can be completely altered with a variety of ingredients.

  • How Long Does The THC Remain In The Body?

The THC from the tea remains in your system from several days to weeks. It’s similar to any other method of consuming weed.

  • Are The Effects Of Marijuana Tea Quick To Hit?

The weed tea starts to show its psychoactive effects within 30 – 60 minutes. Different users may experience it sooner or later depending on their metabolism and tolerance level of weed.

  • Can Honey Be Used With Cannabis Tea?

For a delicious flavour and taste, we recommend that you add honey to the tea. Two of the recipes we have shared feature honey as an ingredient. So, yeah, adding honey in cannabis tea is fine.

Wrapping Up Cannabis Tea

Cannabis tea is a good way of utilizing the stem, shake, and other leftovers from the last batch of weed. It is not just refreshing but provides a much-appreciated way of consuming weed. Not to mention, it is one of the healthiest ways of obtaining daily THC. As the tea takes time to take effect, you have time to plan things anticipating the high.
